fugitifs! faces rediscovered
Designed by Webster
Based on wanted notices published in newspapers in Quebec City and Montreal in the 18th century, the exhibition Fugitives! restores a human face to people who were dehumanized by slavery.
When these people fled, enslavers would place advertisements in newspapers, hoping to find them. Their clothing, physical appearance, intellectual traits, and escape strategies were described in great detail.
Unlike the rest of the Americas, there are no visual depictions of enslaved persons in Quebec. As a result, these wanted notices are now the most important documents we have regarding their appearance. As evidence of a practice too often overlooked in our national narrative, they tell the story of how these people fought against enslavement and dehumanization. Fugitives! is an ode to resistance.
WEBSTER
Militant, Webster s’implique beaucoup socialement.
By bringing these descriptions back to life, it is now possible to imagine what these African, Afro-descendant, and Indigenous people—who resisted slavery in Quebec during the second half of the 18th century—might have looked like.
